Choir News
The children from Grades 3 - 6 who have been interested in trying out the school choir have been meeting each Wednesday afternoon and working on new songs. Focus is on fun and participation, along with learning basic vocal technique and music reading skills. The children who would like to continue on with the group are asked to commit for the remainder of the year.
Thank you to those Grade 6 students who tried out for leadership roles in the choir and presented excellent speeches. Congratulations to Olivia Kennedy and Darcy Callanan who were voted in as Captains, along with Zara Hayward and Charlotte Doherty who will be our Vice-captains.
Junior Choirs Festival
Our first event will be the Junior Choirs Festival which will be hosted by Ballarat Grammar, on Friday 11th May between 1 - 6pm. The children will join several other junior choirs from around Ballarat for this occasion and will attend a workshop lead by Dan Walker, who is a talented choral specialist and composer. The children will take part in a variety of other workshop activities and meet students from other schools who love to sing. The afternoon concludes with a free concert for parents and friends at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts, where each choir will present their own song and join in one massed choir piece at the end (a song called 'Unicorn' which was composed by Dan Walker). More information will be sent out on Caremonkey closer to the date for this choir event.
Ballarat Choral Festival
This year the Ballarat Choral Festival will be held on Sunday 27th May, 1.30pm at St Patrick's Cathedral. Due to this being so close to the Junior Choirs Festival, St Columba's won't be singing at this event. I would encourage families to go along to support the festival and enjoy listening to a range of local Ballarat choirs. It is always a lovely afternoon of choral singing, which concludes with a massed piece involving all choirs.
If there are queries regarding the choir this year, please feel free to contact Ruth rhackwill@scballarat.catholic.edu.au
