Term 4 Karuta Club
This term grade 3-6 students are invited to join in the fun of Karuta, a competitive Japanese card game similar to Snap and Memory. Students play in teams of four and verse other teams in a game of lightning fast reflexes and hiragana recall.
St Columba’s School has been invited to enter three teams of grade 3-6 students in the second annual Ballarat Catholic Schools Karuta Competition in December. In preparation for the event and to assist us in selecting teams, Karuta Club is being held every Monday for the first half of lunchtime from 1.05 until 1.25pm in the Iona Wing. All grade 3-6 students are welcome (and encouraged!) to join the club to learn how to play the game while practising their Japanese skills.

I’ve been using an app at home to practise my Japanese. It is called Duolingo. My whole family does it! You can learn lots of different languages. I’ve started learning Portuguese as well. You can earn gems for completing levels and you gain energy from practising. In Japanese you learn Hiragana, words, phrases and sentences in lots of different ways.
It’s really fun and I hope that you join too.
