Can you sew?
Can you or someone in your family sew? St Columba’s is in the process of creating our own set of twelve school happi (yes ‘happi’, not ‘happy’) coats that students will wear when representing our school at next term’s Ballarat Catholic Schools Karuta Competition. These special festival coats, in the distinctive St Columba’s gold and royal blue, will be worn at various inter-school Japanese events for years to come. Erica will provide the simple pattern template and fabric, all you need is the cotton and a sewing machine! The pattern is very basic and there is not a lot of cutting or sewing involved, so any sewing level will be suffice.
When all twelve happi coats are complete they will be taken to a screen printer to have St Columba’s printed on them in Japanese.
Any help would be appreciated!
Term 4 Ballarat Catholic Schools Karuta Competition
The second annual Ballarat Catholic Schools Karuta Competition is fast approaching. At the beginning of term 4, twelve students from grade 3-6 will be selected to represent St Columba’s at the inter-school competition in two teams. To be selected it is an advantage for students to know all 46 hiragana characters and sounds. If students wish to practice their skills over the holidays, they can see Erica for a set of flashcards or download the Dr Moku Hiragana app.
The following website also has a great list of hiragana apps to explore over the holidays:
