Zen Garden

Many hands make light work, and boy oh boy did they work! Every student from Prep to 6 played a role in the preparation and creation of our zen garden. Whether it was designing, raking bark, shovelling sand, wheelbarrowing soil, placing stones or planting - students from every year level worked together to achieve their common goal of completing the zen garden by Japanese Day. Congratulations everyone, you should be very proud!

St Columba's School's zen garden is an interactive garden that students are encouraged to use. Raking the zen garden can aid in concentration and is the ideal environment for students to go to relax, think, reflect, unwind, meditate, pray and find peace from the hustle and bustle of the stresses of daily life. Students are reminded that this is a quiet area and that the garden and equipment are to be cared for and respected.

Japanese Day

Japanese Day was filled with Japanese culture, music, art, language and celebration! Did you know that our Japanese Day coincided with Children's Day in Japan? Children's Day celebrates the strength, courage, bravery, determination and resilience of children - all qualities we wish for our children as they go through the journey of life.

Students were treated to a special performance by St Alipius School's incredibly talented Taiko drumming group lead by Adam Sensei and Sho Sensei. Year 5 students taught their Prep buddies how to make origami samurai hats, Year 6 students created a collaborative artwork, 3/4s made "den den" drums, 1/2s collaged giant koinabori fish kites and all students constructed their own mini zen garden in their kazoku (family) groups!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who took time out of their busy day to assist with Japanese Day activities and the generous people who donated succulents from their gardens. The students involved in Japanese Club should also be mentioned as well as Sho Sensei and Nicky Russell for helping with the preparation of resources for the special day.
