Dear Parents
Term 4 finishes this Friday 22nd September at the earlier time of 2.30pm. Wishing all families a happy and safe holiday.  School will resume for all students on Monday 9th October at 8.45am.

Teacher Appointments
Last Thursday Fr Marcello Colasante, Shaun Mohr and I held interviews for two teacher positions for 2018.  We were very impressed with the depth in quality of the applicants for these positions.
It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Sarah Jones and Kate Snow for 2018.  I congratulate Sarah and Kate and welcome them to the staff group of St Columba’s.
Sarah began her teaching career at St James, Sebastopol where she taught for 5 years across the school. Currently Sarah is working within the family business, however will commence working as a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) at St Columba’s next term.
Kate completed her Masters in Teaching through Federation University in June this year. Kate completed her final teaching placement in LG 9 in May and has been working as a CRT since graduating.  Kate will teach in LG 14 next term when Emily begins Maternity Leave.
Both Sarah and Kate are passionate about teaching; building strong relationships, engaging students, encouraging individual strengths and interests and celebrating student achievement.

Springfest Beneficiary 2017
St Columba’s School has been successful in our application to Rotary Club of Ballarat to be a beneficiary of profits from this year’s Springfest.
A series of events are held during the Spring calendar months, and at the finalisation of these events, all net profits raised are distributed to a number of community groups and not-for-profit organisations with projects designed to benefit our local Ballarat community.
St Columba’s is one of 15 organisations who will receive the profits from the Springfest events this year.
Thanks to Janet Smith, Chairperson of our Parents & Friends group for putting together the application for the Springfest Beneficiary.  At this stage we do not know how much money we are likely to receive.  The figure is dependent on how much is raised by Rotary through the different events.  The money received will be put towards the creation of an outdoor learning space between the 3/4 and Prep Learning Communities.

We ask all families to support Springfest through purchasing raffle tickets on sale at the school office.  Tickets are $2 each, with the raffle being drawn at Ballarat Golf Club on Thursday December 7th.
Prizes are as follows:
1st Prize - $6,500 (Tools, Outdoor goods & 6x4 stock trailer)
2nd Prize - $800 (Flat screen TV)
3rd Prize - $500 Petrol Card
If you are able to sell a book of 20 tickets, please collect from the front office.

Our school has also been asked to assist at Market Sunday on Sunday 26th November with the Rotary BBQ and with clean up at the end of the day.  We are looking for lots of helpers. Please let one of the P&F members or the ladies in the school office know if you are able to lend a hand.

Parents & Friends Fundraising
Each year our Parents & Friends Committee work extremely hard to raise much needed funds for our school.  Over the last few years we have budgeted for the P&F to raise $30,000 annually.  These funds are vital for our school and are used to improve the school's facilities and resources for the benefit of all the students. The funds raised this year will be used to renovate the toilet block closest to the new Prep Learning Community.  These toilets are very old and need an upgrade, especially the boy’s toilet which is very smelly.  Retiling and regrouting the toilet block will remove the smell.  We are hoping this work will take place over the Christmas holidays.
Your ongoing support of Parents & Friends events is needed to ensure that they can reach their target each year.

Mini Vinnies Footy Colours Day
Last day of this Term - Friday 22nd September.  Please see information below.

Summer Uniform
Term 4 sees the return of our summer uniform, including the school hat.
As we are likely to have a few colder days during the first few weeks of term, children may wear their winter uniform if desired.  Please note that by the start of November, all children must be in full summer uniform. As of the start of term, all children must wear a school hat while outdoors.

Book Fair
We will be holding a Book Fair with Scholastic Books early in Term 3. We appreciate all the support from the community and hope that this event solves some of your Christmas purchasing stress.

The students will be timetabled to view the books, assorted stationery and other resources on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th October and make a ‘wish list’ of potential purchases to take home. After considering the ‘wish list’ parents and / or students are welcome to come to the Book Fair on Monday 16th October during the following times.

8.15 am - 8.45 am
10.50 am - 11.50 am
3.15 pm - 3.45 pm

The methods of payment include cash and eftpos.

This event has been very well supported in the past and the transactions during these limited times can be hectic. If you are available to assist on the day please let Cleta Forrest know.

Yoga for Parents and Students
Our first yoga session will be held on Wednesday 11th October (first week of Term 4) and will continue for 5 consecutive weeks, concluding on Wednesday 8th November.  There are a number of places left in the yoga sessions. Any Grade 3 to 6 student or any parent who would like to take part in the yoga sessions are asked to register your interest at the school office and pay the $25. Michelle, a qualified yoga instructor, will be running the sessions. All equipment will be provided and there will be a maximum of 20 people in each session. The cost of the 5 sessions will be $25 ($5 per session).

Earn and Learn
As you know, our school has been participating in Woolworths Earn & Learn. The program has now finished for this year, so a big thanks to everyone who supported our school. We're now at the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be able to get new educational equipment for our school. The more we collect, the more we can redeem. So this week, please send in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets and any loose Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your handbag, the car glove box or they maybe stuck on the fridge. Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all your support!
