A lot of the advice experts provide around transition, change and beginning new school years relates to two key areas; building routines and making connections with your child’s school. This advice isn’t just tied to beginning school or transitioning to high school and can make a big difference to a students year at any stage. The more information parents can share with teachers, the greater our ability to respond to their specific needs. Two questions we will be asking our new families next week are; “What is it you want for your child at St Columba’s?” and “What do we need to know to best support your child’s learning?” For existing families you may like to find the time over the coming weeks to add a message to the diary or send an email to your child’s teacher responding to the same thoughts. While you’re at it, it would be a great opportunity to recognise something that the teacher has already done for your child this year. Mid term four is an incredibly hectic time in a school with minds still working on the day to day, whilst preparing for end of year and reporting on top of putting together class lists for the next year. It’s amazing what a kind word can do for a teacher in the midst of all of this.
Can I stress that mobile phones have no place in a primary school. Should your child need a phone for emergency reasons such as travelling to and from school then they are required to hand the phone in to the office upon arrival at school. At no time should students have phones on them during the school day, or on excursions. The child safety risks related to a device capable of taking photos/video and connected to the internet/social media far outweighs any benefit that they may hold in terms of educational value. If your child owns a mobile phone, please ensure they are not bringing it to school, or if they must that it is handed to the office.
It’s on again, your chance to take part in what was an incredible event last year and is fast becoming a favourite item on the St Columba’s Calendar. Our annual fun run in Vic Park will take place on Sunday the 2nd December with the 5k run starting at 9am and the 1k and 3k run at 9:30am.
