Bamboo toothbrushes and straws for sale
Fact: 30 million plastic toothbrushes and 2.9 billion plastic straws are disposed of each year in Australia!

St Columba’s School is collaborating with Ballarat business The Boo Collective to offer a more sustainable option to plastic toothbrushes and straws - bamboo!

The Boo Collective offer bamboo biodegradable straws and toothbrushes in adult and child size. Toothbrushes and straws will be available to purchase via order form sent home last week, with money raised going towards our Sustainability program and garden. Samples are available to view at the office.

Recycle your oral care products at St Columba’s!
Our school is competing in the Colgate Community Garden Challenge. By recycling oral care waste, we’re in the running to win a recycled community garden set! Put your used (clean) oral care products in the collection box at the office and replace them with a bamboo toothbrush while you’re at it!

During the competition period, schools will earn Garden Points by sending oral care waste to TerraCycle for recycling, and by earning online votes from the community.
1 unit of oral care waste = 10 Garden Points
1 online vote = 1 Garden Point

Vote for our school! You can vote once per day! https://www.terracycle.com.au/en-AU/contests/colgategardenvoting

ABC War on Waste
We encourage the whole family to find a time to sit down together and watch ABC’s War on Waste (on ABC iView or ABC at 8.30pm on Tuesdays) for some great dinner time conversation starters! #WarOnWasteAU

Boomerang Bags Ballarat
Boomerang Bags is a grassroots, community driven movement  tackling plastic pollution at its source. Volunteers from all walks of life get together to make reusable ‘boomerang bags’ using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. The bags are given away to friends, family, colleagues, bagless strangers and so on, as a plastic bag alternative that can be used and reused, or passed on to others in need. The bags create a platform to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use – one community, needle and thread at a time!

To get involved, find out about upcoming sewing bees or donate fabric, join the Boomerang Bags Ballarat Facebook page or speak to Erica or Nicky.

Have you thought about volunteering in the garden?
Whether it’s running a gardening clinic with students, helping to construct a scarecrow for the Arts Festivals or helping Melissa in the garden on a Tuesday or Thursday, volunteers are always appreciated! Contact the office to arrange a time.

Children are invited to join the “Garden Gnomes” participating in gardening activities beginning Thursday at recess (weather permitting) in the raised garden beds. Anyone is welcome to join in for any amount of time (including parents!). Melissa and Erica will be leading the gardening activities.
